Whole-Plant Seedling Functional Traits Suggest Lianas Also Support “Fast-Slow” Plant Economics Spectrum

چکیده
Lianas are predicted to perform better than trees during seasonal drought among tropical forests, which has substantial implications for tree and forest dynamics. Here, we use whole-plant trait comparison test whether lianas allocated on the resource acquisitive end of continuum woody plant strategies. We measured morphological biomass allocation traits seedlings 153 species occurring in a Thailand dry season. first compared differences between directly, then classified all based their similarities. found that liana had significantly higher specific leaf areas stem lengths co-occurring seedlings. Trait similarity classification resulted liana-dominated cluster tree-dominated cluster. Compared cluster, were characterized by consistent pattern lower matter content cheaper more efficient per mass unit investment both above- below-ground organs. The consistency organs operating tandem content, together with optimized them unit, implied can be highly overlapped strategy gradient acquisition continuum.

SPECIAL FEATURE – FORUM THE TREE OF LIFE IN ECOSYSTEMS The world-wide ‘fast–slow’ plant economics spectrum: a traits manifesto
1. The leaf economics spectrum (LES) provides a useful framework for examining species strategies as shaped by their evolutionary history. However, that spectrum, as originally described, involved only two key resources (carbon and nutrients) and one of three economically important plant organs. Herein, I evaluate whether the economics spectrum idea can be broadly extended to water – the third ...
متن کاملTesting models for the leaf economics spectrum with leaf and whole-plant traits in Arabidopsis thaliana
The leaf economics spectrum (LES) describes strong relationships between multiple functional leaf traits that determine resource fluxes in vascular plants. Five models have been proposed to explain these patterns: two based on patterns of structural allocation, two on venation networks and one on resource allocation to cell walls and cell contents. Here we test these models using data for leaf ...
متن کاملMicrobially Mediated Plant Functional Traits
Plants are rife with bacteria and fungi that colonize roots and shoots both externally and internally. By providing novel nutritional and defense pathways and influencing plant biochemical pathways, microbes can fundamentally alter plant phenotypes. Here we review the widespread nature of microbially mediated plant functional traits. We highlight that there is likely fitness conflict between ho...
متن کاملPlant functional traits suggest novel ecological strategy for an invasive shrub in an understorey woody plant community
1. Understanding ecological strategies of invasive species relative to the entire native community is important in understanding and managing both the mechanisms and the potential impacts of invasion, but few studies have taken this approach. 2. We utilize advances in plant ecology to compare functional traits of an invasive shrub species, autumn-olive Elaeagnus umbellata, to those of the under...
متن کاملEvidence of the 'plant Economics Spectrum' in a Subarctic Flora
1. A fundamental trade-off among vascular plants between traits inferring rapid resource acquisition and those leading to conservation of resources has now been accepted broadly, but is based on empirical data with a strong bias toward leaf traits. Here we test whether interspecific variation in traits of different plant organs obeys this same trade-off and whether within-plant trade-offs are c...
